As many of you know, I lost my dad to heart disease earlier this year, and it has left a space in my life that is impossible to describe. My dad showed up for me in every season of my life. He was my biggest fan, my steady source of laughter, and the kind of man who made everyone feel like family. His love was expansive, joyful, and constant, and I was lucky enough to have it with me every day of his life. Running this race is one small way I can honor his memory by raising funds and awareness about a disease with relentless persistence.
Did you know that heart disease remains the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States? That one person dies every 34 seconds from cardiovascular disease? That in 2023 alone, 919,032 Americans lost their lives to heart disease? And did you know that heart disease is not just a disease of age, with about 1 out of every 6 cardiovascular deaths occurring in people under 65? The American Heart Association uses donations to fund lifesaving research, public education, and community programs that improve prevention, treatment, and recovery for millions of people each year. By supporting this run, you’re helping ensure that other families get more time, more memories, and more love with the people who mean everything to them.
Anyone who knew my dad knows he had many catch phrases. One of his favorites was “life is a series of choices”. I choose to move forward with his spirit guiding me. I choose to run this race to turn my grief into something that might help others. And I ask you to choose to help me reach my goal today.
Thank you!
