Why is Heart Walk important to me?
I walk in honor of my mother's family from China. My grandfather died suddenly at age 57 from a heart attack, and my grandmother had multiple strokes before she died at age 89. All of their children (6 total) had or have some form of cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, multiple heart surgeries, including aortic valve replacement, stents, pacemakers, and only 3 are still alive today. The important research advances and work of the American Heart Association have helped the 3 survivors, me, my siblings and my cousins (17 total!) live longer, healthier lives. We are especially grateful for the American Heart Association's continued commitment to research, care, policies and programs that support equitable health for people of all people, including those that recognize that Asian Americans often have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease due to non-traditional risk factors.
