Running for My Dad - 10 Years Later
Losing my dad at 23 to a heart attack was never the story I expected for myself.
Just months before, we were running together, playing tennis, and doing the normal things you do with someone you assume will always be there. So when he suddenly passed away from a heart attack caused by a main artery that was 95% blocked, it was a complete shock.
I still remember the moment I got the call from my mom while I was on the bus. She told me my dad had collapsed. I was in disbelief. The pain of that moment is something I would never wish on anyone.
Running became my outlet to process that grief.
Over the past 10 years, running has helped me heal in ways I didn't expect. What started as a way to cope turned into something much bigger. I've run multiple marathons, and along the way my friends and family have helped raise over $25,000 for heart research.
This year marks 10 years since my dad passed, and to honor him I've signed up to run the San Francisco Marathon.
I'm running in his memory, but also for something bigger.
Heart disease continues to affect millions of families. My hope is that through research, education, and awareness, fewer children will have to experience the kind of loss that I did.
