This is personal. My 23 year old daughter Aubrey received life-saving emergency open heart surgery in March 2023. She was an otherwise healthy young woman. She was studying to be a nurse, looking forward to graduation and her future looked bright.
She started feeling poorly and we couldn't figure out what she had or why she wasn't getting better. At the 11th hour, some brilliant and compassionate doctors at the Mayo Clinic discovered she had developed an infection that settled in her mitral valve. She secured the last bed at St Mary's and was prepped for open heart surgery.
The waiting was gut wrenchingly agonizing, but our complete trust and faith was put in the skillful surgeon who did not let us down. Aubrey emerged from that surgery with a mechanical valve and the gift to live her life fully. She is now a nurse at Mayo clinic in the ICU where she once a patient and where she gives the same life-saving care she once received.
