I gained 70 pounds during COVID due to poor eating habits, a sedentary lifestyle, and coping mechanisms that I now recognize were unhealthy. Over time, my health declined significantly. I went from being an active athlete to someone who struggled to walk up a flight of stairs or run without becoming completely exhausted. To make matters worse, my excessive caffeine intake and lack of sleep contributed to high blood pressure, requiring me to take preventive medication.
High blood pressure and obesity are major risk factors for heart disease. Heart disease is often called a silent killer because it can develop without warning until it's too late. I have lost several friends in their 30s and 40s to strokes, heart disease, and vascular conditions—many of which were linked to poor diet, lack of exercise, and unmanaged lifestyle habits. Their stories have become a powerful reminder that our health should never be taken for granted.
Three years ago, I made the decision to become a captain because it was time to reclaim my life—not only for my physical and mental well-being, but also for the future I envision for myself and my family. I want to be able to walk, run, stay active, and participate in the moments that make life meaningful. I want to build habits that not only improve my quality of life today but also help me live a healthier, longer life.
Joining this walk is one small step toward a much bigger goal. I made a promise to myself: I will walk. I will run. I will do everything I can—while I still can. Every journey begins with awareness. Awareness leads to action, and repeated action becomes the healthy lifestyle that supports the life you want to live.
This is a simple five-mile walk. Bring your friends, your family, your pets—bring anyone who wants to be part of this journey. I encourage you to take this small step toward a healthier future. Join me and our Mayo family as we walk together.
Do it for yourself. â¤ï¸
