On September 1, 2010, my sister Suzy and her husband were getting ready for bed when she started talking gibberish. Recognizing the warning signs of a stroke, her husband quickly dialed 911. Within minutes, she was on her way to the hospital, where doctors confirmed that Suzy suffered a stroke caused by a blood clot in her brain. Suzy continued to have a few more episodes that the doctors thought were caused by small platelets breaking off of the clot. Over the next two days, the episodes continued, and by the 5th of September, she had lost the ability to speak and all feeling and mobility on her right side. After 4 weeks of intense inpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy and continued weekly outpatient visits, Suzy is now able to walk with a cane. As an avid cyclist prior to her stroke, one of Suzy's goals at the beginning of her physical therapy journey was to get back on a bike and in September 2012, she was able to accomplish that goal.
