As part of this year's American Heart Association Leaders of Impact campaign, I'm dedicated to making a lasting impact on the health of our community and hope I can count on your support!
Despite many advances, cardiovascular disease is still the No. 1 killer in the US. Furthermore, millions of people across the country face a higher risk of heart disease because they lack access to basic needs like healthy food, clean air and drinking water, quality education, employment and safe housing.
The American Heart Association is committed to advancing health and hope for everyone, everywhere. We're removing barriers to health through work in communities, scientific research, advocating for health policies and more.
September 13, 2026 marked the two-year anniversary of my 'death' from sudden cardiac arrest.
Friday, September 13, 2024, I was at my gym working out. I got light headed and 'passed out' when leaning over to pick up a weight. As it turned out, I had a heart attack...sudden cardiac arrest. My heart stopped beating. I was literally dead on the floor.
If it weren't for a heroic response by a few people that knew CPR, use of the AED, and calling 9-1-1, I would likely be dead or have severe brain injury.
People sometimes think heart attack only happens to older people and people out of shape. It can happen to anyone. Any time. Anywhere. I didn't have high cholesterol or high blood pressure.
Heart disease can be a silent killer.
It is this experience that prompted the American Heart Association to contact me about their Leaders of Impact program. After some conversations with close friends and family, I decided to participate in this program as a Leader of Impact nominee. We are working to raise money for research and education, including CPR training.
If my involvement saves even one life, it is worth it!
I have assembled a team around me of close friends and family to help me on this seven week journey: Scott Duffy, Ken Joslin, Katy Temple, Geoffrey Goldstein, Gina Marie Urizar, Brianna Carcamo, Emily Allison, Jeannine Valdivia, Amber Goetz, Julie Lodge, Ella Henry, and Madison DeGraan. We will be hosting a few events here in San Diego over the coming weeks. If you need info, please let me know. I feel truly blessed to be alive, to have such amazing friends supporting me in this campaign, and to be able to give back in this way.
That's why I'm committed to being a part of this relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives for all. I believe in this cause and our ability to make an impact in our local community and across the country, and I'm asking for your support.
There are two simple ways you can help me save lives right now.
