2027 Central Iowa Heart Walk
A Miracle on the Track.
What started as a routine high school track meet quickly turned into a life-or-death moment when 15-year-old Nate Bentley collapsed just seconds after finishing his relay leg. One moment he was achieving his personal best and cheering on his teammate. Then, after just a few steps, he fell face-first onto the track, unresponsive. Those nearby immediately recognized something was seriously wrong. This wasn’t just a fall; Nate was in cardiac arrest.
Within seconds, bystanders jumped into action. CPR was started immediately while an AED was rushed to the scene. A group of everyday heroes - coaches, a nurse, and a parent - worked together seamlessly. In less than five minutes, he was breathing again. He was then rushed to the hospital.
Today, Nate’s story is more than one of survival, it’s proof that preparedness changes outcomes. Because CPR began immediately, and an AED was available.
Nate walked our last Heart Walk and proudly crossed the finish line because of the heroes who had saved his life.
