Why We Walk
2021 Capital Region Heart Walk & Run
Aedan's Ventricular Trio
I was 20 weeks pregnant when we learned that our baby had a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
That means that Aedan’s left ventricle never developed and he lives with basically half of a heart. Aedan has had three open heart surgeries at four days old, six months old, and two years old. He has also had three cardiac catheterizations.
Aedan has been an advocate for the American Heart Association for most of his life, first at 17 months old, sharing his story at the Capital Region Heart Ball. Not too much later, he met with legislators to pass the Pulse Ox Law in New York, making sure that all newborns have their oxygen levels checked before discharge from the hospital. A low oxygen level could indicate a critical congenital heart defect. Aedan’s Capital Region Heart Walk team – Aedan’s Ventricular Trio – is always one of the top fundraising teams. When Aedan was just four years old, the Heart Walk took place on a day that didn’t just rain – it poured. Drenched and chilly, Aedan declined our offer to end the walk early, and walked the entire three miles. He helped launch Vermont Teddy Bear’s “Love Your Heart Bear,” a bear with a scar like Aedan’s, sales of which benefit the American Heart Association.
Now 9-and-a-half, Aedan plays tee ball, swims, golfs and tears up the ski slopes in the winter. He’s a regular at the Cardiac Kids meetings which I am the parent lead of. And Aedan returned to the Heart Ball in February 2020 to help honor his pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Eric Spooner.
We know that the money raised at the Heart Walk will help Aedan continue to grow and live a good, full life. I am also the Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association in Albany. We’re walking for our health and yours. For our parents, our children and our grandchildren. Who will you walk for?
