Why We Walk
2021 Greater Akron Heart Walk
Jeff's Heart Pumpers
The last 12 months have been such a whirlwind for Christina and I, and this is our way to start giving back and making a difference in heart health.
So many people have been generous to us since I was diagnosed with heart failure and genetic cardiomyopathy and received my LVAD in Sept. 2020. We are hoping this is the first of many opportunites to promote heart health and raise money for what we believe to be a very important cause.
I want to especailly thank the Waikem family and the Waikem Auto Family associates for their thoughts, prayers and support of me during this past year.
Some background about me. In early August 2020 I started to not feel well, out of the blue. I would feel shortness of breath, fullness before finishing meals and eventually noticed my feet swelling. Previously, I had no symptoms and I was very active, even riding my bike up to 20 miles on the weekend.
I would have never guessed that my heart was functioning at only 15%. I was life-flighted to the Cleveland Clinic, and it was a stunning and very scary time for me and Christina. I spent nearly two full months there, recieving excellent care, where I received an LVAD (left ventricular assist device). The device is placed on my aorta and left ventricle, and it allows my heart to pump blood throughout my body. It's powered by two heavy lithium ion batteries that I must wear at all times.
Nearly a year later, I am now on the heart transplant list. Thanks to frequent excerise and a low sodium diet, the doctors and nureses are very pleased with my recovery, and I am even back on the bike!
The American Heart Association's online resources have been an excellent source of education on living a life with heart failure and living a more heart-healthy lifestyle.
