Heart disease has affected my family for generations. From my grandparents and parents, I have seen heart disease and its effect on families. My grandfather suffered a heart attack in his 50s and then later when in his 80s. My father underwent bi-pass surgery and ulitimately passed away from a heart attack in his late 40s. My step-father had a heart attack several years ago and was taken to the hospital just in time to get lifesaving treatment and my mother has been treating a heart valve defect that may require surgery down the road.
But even with this family history, it wasn't until recently that I realized how important the fight against this disease really is. Two friends, close to my age, both passed away unexpectedly from heart disease. Both incidents served as a wake up call for me to take action on my own heart health. As someone diagnosed with pre-hypertension at 28, I knew I could no longer ignore my own situation. Focused on heart health, I now take medication to control my blood pressure and receive regular checkups from my cardiologist. I also continue to support the AHA in learning more about heart disease and how to prevent and properly treat the disease and am asking you to help too!
What will your donation do? I'm glad you asked. Every donation will help create big science, like science that created the artificial heart valve. The moment you contribute to the Heart Walk, you are contributing to, witnessing, and progressing lifesaving science. Lives can't be saved without you. Will you donate today?
