Through the years, while it is easier to reflect on the past, I still miss my brother every day and the immense feeling of loss takes pause, but it never goes away. I'm not able to find the words to adequately articulate the emotional journey of enduring such loss but for those who have traveled a similar path through the loss of one deeply loved, you understand.
Heart disease and stroke invade life when least expected. Sudden cardiac arrest took my brother from us on a chilly morning on December 26th. Lou was so much fun to be around and just loved making people laugh. He adored his family and had a special sparkle in his eye for his grandchildren and nephews--his face would light-up for the day just to watch them play. He was the guy who would assemble the neighborhood kids for sports and fun and everyone loved Lou. After his busy day at the steel mill, he would come home and still make time for others—he loved to give. His generosity would inspire others to give of their time, talents, and treasures.
I’m asking you to give. Give a gift in honor of one closest to your heart—for a future free of heart disease and stroke through prevention and treatment advancements. Give a gift in loving memory of one who was taken away too soon from the onslaught of heart disease or stroke. Give a gift in tribute to one facing a cardiovascular challenge today—so their fear is transformed into hope. Won't you please give?
