We're a relentless force! Now imagine how much stronger we'll be working as a team! As you know, CHD affect nearly 1% of―or about 40,000―births per year in the United States. The prevalence of some heart defects, especially mild types, are increasing. The prevalence of other types has remained stable.
About 1 in 4 babies with a heart defect have a critical heart defect. Infants with critical heart defects generally need surgery or other procedures in their first year of life. Heart defects are a leading cause of birth defect-associated infant illness and death.
Infant deaths due to heart defects often occur when the baby is younger than 28 days old. 1 in every 814 deaths in children are attributable to heart defects in the United States. Nearly half (48%) of the deaths due to heart defects occurred during infancy (younger than 1 year of age).
As research and advancements are made in the field of Congenital Heart Disease, we have seen an increase in the life span of patients living with CHD. There are now more adults living with CHD then children born with CHD.
I am proud to work with such an Amazing team who are devoted in caring for patients with CHD. Our Echo and Cath Lab are Accredited by the IAC due to our dedication and quality care that we provide on a daily basis at Wolfson Children's Hospital.
